PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Identify, state the purpose of, use and maintain hand tools and measuring instruments used in the air-conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation trades to carry out trade related projects accurately and without injury or damage. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that people starting to learn towards this unit standard are already able to communicate with others. ABET 4 literacy. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Hand tools:
Files, chisels, hacksaws, reamers (de-burrers), taps, dies, punches, hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, crimping pliers, wire strippers, tin snips, pullers, socket wrenches (spanners), adjustable wrenches (spanners), torque wrenches, pipe wrenches, number and letter punches (stamps), vices, wire brushes, ring/open spanners, Allen keys and soldering irons.

Measuring instruments:
Tapes, rulers, callipers, micrometers, feeler gauges, set squares, drill gauges, scribers, verniers, taper gauges, vee-belt tension gauges, pulley gauges, thread gauges, the spirit level, tachometers and clock/dial gauges.
