PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This standard is aimed at people who work in or intend to work within a chemical industry and are required to transfer petroleum and chemical products from ships/tankers. This is usually done to and from shore installations.

Site instructions include all instructions at a specific site.
Components of equipment or a transfer system may include: Pipelines, hoses, couplings, valves, blinds pumps, instruments (pressure, level flow indicators), control equipment (control valves, process control equipment or systems), 'breaks' in pipe manifold and the vessels from which and to which the substance is transferred. It includes equipment or transferring systems that are fixed installations or the use of loose hoses, valves, pig-traps, blank flanges or siphons, pumps, containers as found small and micro industries. Applicable to Assessment Criteria: Consequences of transferring liquids and or gases may include potential damage to equipment, hazards and risk to environment caused by the use of equipment or procedures that are not adequate to handle the liquid and/or gases transferred or fit for the purpose. Applicable to Assessment Criteria: State of equipment may include contents, hygiene/contamination, serviceability and availability. Applicable to all Specific outcomes. Preparation of equipment to be used may include connecting hoses; confirming integrity of pipe/flow route (interlocks, valves and isolation breaks in the piping manifold); clearing blockages, fixing leaks; draining and or flushing lines; ensuring vessels can accommodate quantities to be transferred etc. Applicable to all Specific outcomes. Documents included: Tanker loaders logs & density checks, loading-instructions, production plans, gauge sheets, Certificate of Quality, control logs custody transfers reports (P201) and safety checks. Applicable to Assessment Criteria: All work must be carried out in accordance with safety requirements which include compliance with instructions, use of PPE and safety measurement equipment such as explosive/toxic gas meters, and documentation recording compliance with instructions, condition of bunds, ventilation, fire fighting protection equipment. Communication includes communication with single buoy moorings and marine personnel using site-specific communication systems. Monitoring includes checking the position of the vessel/tanker with regard to safety, health and environmental requirements. Marine authority includes vessel owners and operators, port authorities and local government. |
