In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
To recognise the learner's knowledge and skills regarding the treatment of effluents from a tank farm or similar operation.

Learners who want to access the outcomes of this unit standard will know about and be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of chemical effluents and their treatment.
  • Operate an effluent treatment plant.
  • Conduct supporting activities related to effluent treatment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of operating an effluent treatment plant during an upset or emergency situation.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The operation of equipment specific to an effluent plant has to be understood. Application of process chemistry, related technology and safety practices in a process facility also required. Further to this the maintenance of basic health and safety practices to be understood and applied.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE
This standard is applicable in a chemical or equivalent process environment where effluent or potentially hazardous materials is processed on a routine basis using a predetermined method or procedure.

Treatment process involves the operation of equipment (such as pumps, separators/depurators, evaporators & filters) and or static facilities (such as vessels, evaporation and other ponds & bunds) and or containment apparatus such as booms.

Effluent plants are generally operated on a continuous basis.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate knowledge of chemical effluents and their treatment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Effluents originating in a process operation are identified and described with reference to their physical and chemical characteristics.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Effluent treatment methods and streams/rundowns are described for the effluents treated in a specific effluent treatment plant.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Legal and site specific requirements are described and interpreted in terms of the effluent(s) and the effluent treatment method(s) used.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Operate an effluent treatment plant.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Starts-up components of the effluent plant in accordance with site specific instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The effluent treatment plant is operated (monitored and controlled) in accordance with instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The components of the effluent plant is made safe for maintenance in accordance with instructions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Conduct supporting activities related to effluent treatment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Communicate with personnel regarding the status of effluent and the treatment of effluent in a an appropriate manner.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Conduct sampling and evaluation of samples in accordance with instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Evaluate effluent treatment and take appropriate action if the treatment does not meet the requirements specified.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Demonstrate knowledge of operating an effluent treatment plant during upset or emergency situation.
    OUTCOME NOTES
Demonstrate knowledge and application of operating an effluent treatment plant during an upset or emergency situation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Identify hazards, risks and the potential impact that could be caused from these hazards etc.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
'Divert' effluent treatment activities in accordance with site specific instructions and in relation to the legal requirements.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
