PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard will be useful to learners who wish to gain a basic competence in the preparation and presentation of worship in their own congregational context.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard are able to:
  • Prepare a standard act of worship in their own denomination
  • Lead or share in leading such an act of worship 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners are assumed to be competent in Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following scope and context applies to the whole Unit Standard and should include:
  • Standard worship in one faith community or Christian tradition. 

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare a standard act of worship in their own denomination. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    A standard act of worship is understood as one regularly and normally used in the learner's own tradition. Range includes choice of texts [scripture, songs, liturgy etc.], norms, patterns and regulations in the chosen liturgical tradition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An understanding of a standard act of worship is explained as it is used in one's own tradition. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The outline of an order of service is presented in a structured, connected and denominationally appropriate form. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The order of service is explained as a biblically and theologically appropriate aspect of the Christian faith. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • The context and the needs of the faith community being served are taken into account.
  • May include use of visual aids, technology, dramatisation, poetry and music, fresh liturgical design.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Lead or share in leading such an act of worship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The act of worship is conducted, reported on and critiqued in accordance of one's community faith traditions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Reports and critique should be made by the learner, by a church leader and by members of the congregation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Gestures and posture are identified and discussed where appropriate. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Participation of the congregation in the act of worship is facilitated.

    Providers of learning towards this Unit Standard will need to meet the accreditation requirements of the relevant ETQA.

    The moderation requirements of the relevant ETQA must be met in order to award credit to learners for this Unit Standard.

    The following essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance.
