PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard in combination with context expertise standard(s) will be able to monitor the construction of two types of on-site dry sanitation technologies, namely Ventilated Improved Pit Toilets (VIPs) and Urine Diversion Systems (UDSs), and establish whether the construction work meets the required quality standards. Learners accessing this standard will be working in sanitation project teams. This will contribute towards effective sanitation project management and the delivery of proven generic, durable, robust, good quality, cost effective, technology options to people. Achieving this unit standard will enhance the efficiency of the qualifying learner and advance his / her own expertise and employability in water and other related sectors. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Literacy and communication skills NQF level 3 or equivalent. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard should have sound knowledge of the construction of all elements of a Ventilated Improved Pit Toilet (VIP) and Urine Diversion System (UDS) and should be able to monitor the construction of these facilities to the extent that he or she would be able to identify problems and take appropriate action, including reporting to higher authority if necessary.

Monitor the construction of pits and soakaways for VIPs and UDSs.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
