PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This Unit Standard is intended for learners intending to work as professionals dealing with social impact assessment where environmental processes are involved. It is also aimed at learners who will be involved in designing and managing participatory processes, particularly in the context of society and environment Interactions. The learner may also work as part of a professional team including environmental specialists, planners, developers, engineers and the like, but where most of the above-mentioned have sector-specific expertise, the learner will design and manage participatory processes of interested and affected parties.

Learners will be capable of:

Communicating effectively in designing and managing a public participation process

Identifying and justifying applicability of the principles and practices of social participation

Developing a framework for a public participation process

Explaining and applying mechanisms for managing a social participation process

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Communication skills at NQF level 5. It would also be useful to have skills in project management and knowledge of social and environmental processes and problems.

Society and environment interactions can be seen simply as human actions that interact with the natural resources around us in ways that that have an impact (positive or negative) on people's lives and/or on the natural resources. Some of these interactions can result from simple actions at a household level, or they may be result from larger structures in society and the way they are set up or operate, for example, a particular economic system, a land tenure policy, a development strategy, or the way legislation is defined.

Society and environment interactions are complex, and include most human activities because what we do has an impact on natural resources and processes. The focus is less on people as individuals, and more on structures in society e.g. business, government, communities etc. and how decisions taken in one can impact on other parts of society and on the environment with consequences for people.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Assessment of this Unit Standard should be contextual and practical as far as possible.

Assessors must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.

Assessors, accredited by the relevant ETQA, must have a qualification relating to Society and Environment Interactions or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 7

Moderators must be registered as assessors with the appropriate ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.

Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.

Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
