PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard enables the learner to identify and use various information-gathering tools in a specific community development context. Learners will learn how to use such tools in order to be able to compile information and present it to relevant stakeholders including a community committee or a project team or a supervisor.

This Unit Standard is intended for learners who will engage in a specific community development project where a social profile or assessment of community needs is required. The learner will most likely be working as part of a project team, reporting to a project manager, or might be a community-based development worker facilitating internal development processes. This unit standard is written specifically with the facilitation of social participation in mind.


The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and explaining tools and methods for information-gathering purposes in a community context
  • Using appropriate tools and methods to gather information in a community context
  • Organising, evaluating and presenting information relating to a community context 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Communication, literacy and numeracy at NQF level 3 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Research tools or methods could include Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), Participatory Action Research (PAR) or similar, or more directed interview tools and techniques, observation schedules or base-line survey protocols.

    The scope of work would generally be restricted to particular communities and to specific projects, rather than regions or programmes.

    Tools are selected, with reasons, as relevant for particular social information-gathering purposes.

    Key individuals and other groupings in a community are identified for information-gathering purposes and described in terms of their community roles.

    Interviews are conducted in a practical manner according to current best practice.

    Observation tools are used as required.

    Community stakeholders are consulted on the process of participation and engagement.

    Assessment of this Unit Standard should be contextual and practical as far as possible.
  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors, accredited by the relevant ETQA, must have a qualification relating to Society and Environment interactions or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 5.
  • Moderators must be registered as assessors with the appropriate ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the appropriate ETQA.
  • Moderation should include both internal and external moderation where applicable.
  • Training providers must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
