PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners assessed against this unit standard will possess the basic skills and techniques required to participate in small boat tasks as crew or coxswain.

Persons credited with this unit standard will through the application of these skills enhance the capabilities of security organisations to maintain peace and security in the community. This skill can also be applied in the field of culture and arts, sub field sport.

    The major influences of oceanography in the Southern Africa coastal region are explained.

    The physical features of a typical harbour are identified by sight according to the mariner's handbook.

    The ability to assess the features of a given beach and determine its suitability for handling small craft is demonstrated.

    The effect of wind on water, swell and wave action are described.

    The ability to assess the speed and direction of the current to determine an entry and exit point from the river is demonstrated as described in work place procedures.

    The preparation of personal equipment (e.g. waterproofing, buoyancy and method of flotation, etc) is demonstrated according to work place procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The ability to cross a river with personal equipment unassisted to a pre-determined exit point is demonstrated.

    The ability to consider the characteristics, features and limitations of inflatable boats during the planning of riverine operations is demonstrated.

    The preparation and maintenance of an inflatable boat (e.g. hull, engine, equipment, packing, storage, etc) as described in organisational procedures is demonstrated.

    The duties and responsibilities, as described in work place procedures, of the various crewmembers on an inflatable boat are understood and demonstrated.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any relevant assessment agency, assessor or provider institution, which is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • For an applicant to register as an assessor, the applicant needs:
    - Well-developed interpersonal skills, subject matter experience and assessment experience.

    Identify and solve problems in which responses display that responsible decisions using critical and creative thinking has been made. The learner is responsible for the analysis of environmental conditions to determine the appropriate measures required to ensure safety while in or on the water. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING 
    Working effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community. The execution of tasks carried out on rivers, inland water systems and closed waters require team efforts to ensure safety of all involved. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING 
    Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively. Working on a boat or in the water require sound planning of all activities at all times. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING 
    Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information. Weather patterns, sea states and other environmental factors must be analysed continually to ensure the safe outcome of any activity in or on water. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING 
    Communicate effectively using visual and language skills in modes of oral and written persuasion. Safety considerations and detailed planning is the essence of successful small boat training. In this sense the learner has to cooperate and communicate by means of oral, written and signals (hand/radio) with the rest of the team. 

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE 
    Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and the health of others. There is clear policy wrt the safety of others and the environment when dealing with water and the sea. The essence of this subject is to teach a learner exactly this. 

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA 
    Assessors should keep in mind the following general guidelines and principles when designing and conducting assessments:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the specific outcomes of the unit standard and ensure that the assessment is integrated rather than fragmented.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Assessment must include practical demonstration either in the workplace or through simulation. A range of assessment methods should be used, including:
    - Direct observation - watch the learner carry out the tasks or produce the desired outcome.
    - Simulation of a specific task - set a specific task for the learner to demonstrate in a simulated environment (e.g. demonstrating the rowing action).
    - Questioning (verbal or written) - ask the relevant questions linked to the unit standard.
