PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This is an elective unit standard at Level 6, which can be credited to the Advanced Certificate in Education (School Management and Leadership) at Level 6.

The unit standard is suitable for those responsible for subject/learning area/phase leadership in schools.

This unit standard will be studied with the unit standard 'Manage teaching and learning', to provide additional credits for subject/learning area/phase specific engagement. However, it will be understood that programmes for subject/learning area/phase leaders (Heads of Department) in a school will apply the outcomes of the core unit standards in the ACE (School Management and Leadership) specifically to subject leadership.

Qualifying learners will be able to lead and manage the planning, implementation and monitoring/evaluation of teaching and learning to ensure quality learning for all in the particular subject/learning area/phase. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
This unit standard assumes that the learner
  • Is competent in the language of instruction of the provider
  • Has knowledge and skills of teaching, learning and assessment in schools
  • Has some knowledge and practical experience of schools, the school system and the broader profession
  • Has content knowledge and teaching experience in the selected specialist subject/learning area/phase. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Learners are required to demonstrate in depth understanding of the curriculum statements for one selected phase/learning area/subject specialization, as well as broad understanding of the policy approach to curriculum and assessment in general.

    Develop policies, plans and targets, in ways that establish shared vision and direction for the subject/learning area/phase in the context of the school development plan. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Be able to interpret and apply national curriculum requirements for the particular subject/learning area or phase, and ensure that subject/learning area/phase staff are able to do this as well. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Ensure curriculum coverage, continuity and progression in the subject/learning area/phase for all learners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Provide guidance on the design of learning programmes and teaching, learning and assessment methods to meet the needs of the subject and of different learners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Together with other teachers in the subject/learning area/phase, develop, implement and evaluate assessment policies and practices appropriate to the subject/learning area and phase. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Set expectations and targets for staff and learners in relation to standards of learner achievement, and evaluate progress and achievement in the subject/learning area/phase by all learners. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Evaluate the teaching of the subject/learning area/phase in the school, use this analysis to identify effective practice and areas for improvement, and take action to improve further the quality of teaching. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Evaluate own subject/learning area/phase knowledge and teaching competence and develop a personal professional development strategy, and assist other teachers in the subject/learning area/phase to do likewise.
