PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of a graphical user interface (GUI) environment;
  • Write a computer program using a procedural programming language for a GUI environment
  • Test a computer program written using a procedural programming language for a GUI environment.
The performance of all elements is to a standard that allows for further learning in this area.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credit value of this unit standard is calculated assuming a person has the prior knowledge and skills to:
  • Apply the principles of computer programming
  • Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental mathematics (at least NQF level 3)
  • Apply the principles of creating computer programs using a procedural programming language in a text-based environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The demonstration includes use of the GUI features.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Windows, controls, configuration, online help, inter application communication, data integration (at least 2)

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The demonstration includes a description of the GUI that compares the principles of GUI with text-based environments.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The demonstration justifies decisions on the use of a GUI environment for given situations, by describing the advantages and disadvantages of the environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The demonstration includes a description of current developments in GUI environments that outlines the features of those developments.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Write a computer program using a procedural programming language in a GUI environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The program code implements the program design.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Maintain self-documenting characteristics of the programming language

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The program code and data structures make efficient use of computing resources.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Input and output, processor, memory, code optimised to reduce redundancy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    The program structure is event-driven.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The program uses the GUI application programming interface (API).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The program code uses language instructions that facilitate the understanding of the code.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
The program code uses language constructs that facilitate the understanding of the code.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
Global data sharing is minimised to enable weak coupling, and modules exhibit functional cohesion.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8
The documentation written is enhanced by the programmer-supplied names.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Test a computer program written using a procedural programming language in a GUI environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The test checks all program logic paths.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The test uses a real-time source-level debugging tool to diagnose program errors.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The program code is corrected to eliminate errors identified through testing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The test verifies that the program functions according to the design requirements.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
The relevant Education and Training Quality Authority (ETQA) must accredit providers before they can offer programs of education and training assessed against unit standards.

    Moderation Process:
Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
