PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable construction plasterers to apply special surface plastering and screeding. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. Special surface coatings include one or more of: Barian Plaster, "Gamma-Zenith" coating, and other chemical compound screeds.

2. Components of special surface coating systems include pigments, extenders, fillers, binders, thinners, additives, and catalysts, including durability, application and film attribute.

3. Properties of special surface coatings include opacity, consistency, flow, adhesion, elasticity, drying time, gloss, spreading rate, durability and can stability.

4. New and previously coated special surfaces are prepared.

5. Methods of drying special surface coatings include oxidation, evaporation, and polymerization.

6. Potential coating problems include non-drying, adhesion, surface disintegration, and can stability defects, including skinning, fattening, livering, settling, flocculation and gelling.

7. Floor coatings include coatings for interior and exterior floors.

8. Thermal/plaster cladding systems include flashing systems, foam claddings, reinforcement, modified plasters and finishing systems.

9. Component failure effects include bleeding, cracking, crazing, chalking, discoloration, loss of gloss, retarded drying, floating, yellowing, mould, mildew, and blistering.
