PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard forms part of the National Certificate in Auctioneering Support. While it is suited for people working in the auctioneering industry it would also be applicable to any person responsible for the handling and transportation of livestock and game as well as agricultural products.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Moving livestock and game
  • Moving agricultural products
  • Loading and unloading livestock and game
  • Permanently identifying and weighing livestock and game
  • Organising the transportation of livestock and game
  • Completing documentation for the transport of livestock and game 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners accessing this Unit Standard are competent in Communications and Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Safety equipment may include but is not limited to shield, helmet, goggles, overalls, Safety shoes
  • Livestock species will include cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, fish and equine
  • Game will include antelope, zebra, buffalo, wildebeest, elephant, rhinos, hippo, warthog, bush-pig, carnivores, ungulates, very large mammals and small mammals
  • Agricultural products will include maize, wheat, vegetables, fruit, flowers, herbs, bulbs, seeds, wool, mohair, carcasses, cured hides and skins

    Move livestock and game. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Livestock and game are moved with minimum stress and with least risk of injury to themselves, other livestock and game, or people. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The behaviour of livestock and game is anticipated and behaviour that could lead to increased stress and or injury to themselves other livestock or people is prevented using standard techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Measures to avoid stress and injury and to ensure a good settling in period, while holding livestock and game in yards are implemented as directed by supervisors. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Safety equipment and appropriate clothing and footwear which minimises the risk of injury to self and livestock and game are used in accordance with activity carried out. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Move agricultural products.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Agricultural products are moved with least risk of damage to products and injury to people. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Measures are implemented, while holding agricultural products in yards, to avoid contamination, unnecessary aging and damage as well as injury to people in the yard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety equipment and appropriate clothing and footwear are used in accordance with activity carried out in a manner which minimises the risk of injury to self and damage to agricultural products. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Load and unload livestock, game and agricultural products.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Loading and unloading are carried out in accordance with legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Loading and unloading of livestock and game are carried out with least risk of injury to themselves, other livestock and game, or people. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Loading and unloading of agricultural products is carried out to avoid contamination, unnecessary aging and damage as well as injury to people participating in the loading and unloading. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Permanently identify and weigh livestock, game and agricultural products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment for weighing and identifying livestock, game and agricultural products is prepared and used in accordance manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Livestock and game are handled for identification and weighing in a manner which does not cause stress or risk of injury. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Agricultural products are handled for identification and weighing in a manner which does not cause damage or contamination to the products or injury to the workers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Livestock, game and agricultural products are weighed in accordance with standard procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Livestock and game are permanently identified, in a manner which is humane, hygienic and in accordance with organizational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Agricultural products are permanently identified, in a manner which is hygienic and in accordance with prior instructions of the supervisor.

    Records of livestock, game and agricultural products are maintained according to organisational requirements.

    Organise the transportation of livestock, game and agricultural products.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Agreement is reached with seller and buyer on their responsibilities relating to the transport of livestock, game and agricultural products. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Transport rates which are acceptable to both buyer and seller are negotiated according to standard procurement procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Transport details are arranged in accordance with the seller's and buyer's requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Transport is organised to minimise stress to animal in accordance with legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Transport is organised to avoid contamination, unnecessary aging and damage.

    Complete documentation for the transport of livestock, game and agricultural products.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Legal health requirements applicable to the products offered by the seller are adhered to at all times by the seller and the auctioneer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Consignment notes, delivery tally confirmation, and acknowledgements are completed in accordance with conditions for legal delivery. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Insurance forms, if required, are completed in accordance with organisational procedures and requirements.
