PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner who has achieved this unit standard will be competent in:
  • Applying safety and health procedures in a fruit packing facility 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    To enter a learning programme for this unit standard or to be assessed against this unit standard, the learner is assumed to have:
  • Literacy, numeracy and communication skills at or equivalent to NQF level 1.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this unit standard deals with the applying safety and health procedures in a fruit packing facility.The specific outcomes reflected in this unit standard should be performed without direct supervision, but withaccess to work site procedures and operating instructions.

    1. Statutes: Occupational Health and Safety Act (1993).Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (1993).
    2. Safety indicators: colour coding, demarcation lines, safety signs, safety guards, locations/exits, lights, sirens, designated areas.
    3. Emergency procedures: fire drills and alarms, assembly points, evacuation procedures and routes.
    4. Production equipment: electrical, mechanical, automated, manually operated.
    5. Personal protective equipment requirements: hand and foot protection, eye, ear, face and head protection, respirators, masks, protective clothing against extreme temperature.
    6. Unsafe or hazardous conditions: to personnel and/or product and/or plant; caused by personnel and/or equipment; incidents, accidents or injuries on duty.
