PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to prepare their workstation for a back cleanse, record relevant clients information on the client record card and assess the skin before commencing the back cleanse. The learner is also able to use a steamer, perform an exfoliation/deep cleansing of the back using brush equipment and masks. They are also able to select and apply masks, moisturisers according to set requirements, processes and standards.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the workstation in accordance with organisation and hygienic requirements
  • Recording all relevant information on client record card for immediate use and to update for future consultation
  • Assessing the skin in order to perform a back cleanse by utilising appropriate equipment and products
  • Operating, managing and effectively use an appropriate steamer according to manufacturers instructional and hygienic requirements
  • Performing exfoliation / deep cleansing of the back using products and brush equipment
  • Selecting, managing, applying and removing a mask on the back according to organisational and hygienic requirements
  • Selecting, managing and applying a moisturiser on the back according to organisational and hygienic requirements 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners assessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against the National Certificate in Beauty: Manicure and Pedicure or Aesthetic Consultancy or Make-up Consultancy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent

  • A basic hygiene procedure includes the personal cleanliness, sanitation of tools, equipment, plinth / chair, area and trolley
  • Client comfort includes appropriate positioning, temperature, relaxation, lighting, noise levels

  • Recognised safety precautions pertaining to electrical and chemical procedures must be applied
  • Receiving the client will include supply with appropriate protective clothing and positioning them comfortably
  • Lifestyle includes occupation, exercise, stress levels and leisure activities
  • Skin assessment includes skin type and / or conditions, sebaceous secretions, moisture content, skin elasticity, muscle tone, cutaneous circulation, sensitivity, pore size, lines and wrinkles, imperfections and sun sensitivity
