PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended to create an awareness of the effects of substance abuse and addiction and where help can be obtained.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing substance abuse and the process towards addiction.
  • Identifying the most frequently abused substances and their short-term effects.
  • Describing the long-term effects of substance abuse on the individual and others.
  • Explaining how to access support structures in the community.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is
  • Alcohol, over the counter medicines, illicit and prescription drugs and inhalants.
  • High risk behaviour such as drug rape, testing positive for a banned substance, road rage, suicide, aggression, violence and impulsive behaviour.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Describe substance abuse and the process towards addiction. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concept of substance use is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The concept of dependence is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The concept of addiction is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The substance dependency process is outlined in order to identify own at risk behaviour. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Situations that could possibly trigger at risk behaviour are identified and an indication is given of how to avoid inadvertent exposure to harmful substances. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the most frequently abused substances and their short-term effects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The most frequently abused drugs and substances are named and an indication is given of how each affects mood and behaviour. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Range includes, but is not limited to, alcohol, dagga, mandrax, narcotics, ecstasy, heroine, cocaine, crack, CAT, ephedrine, mentholated spirits, common over the counter drugs, ephedrine and inhalants.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The risks related to short-erm effects of drugs and substances are identified with reference to road use, occupational safety and high risk behaviour. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Describe the long-term effects of substance abuse on the individual and others. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The long-term effects of abuse of the most commonly used drugs and substances on the individual are indicated with reference to physical, mental, occupational and social wellbeing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The long-term effect of substance abuse on others is explained with reference to social functioning. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The legal consequences of substance abuse are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Risks associated with the long-term use and abuse of drugs and substances is discussed with reference to personal safety, financial aspects and exposure to criminal activities. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain how to access support structures in the community.

    The recovery process is outlined for affected individuals. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Support structures and resources are identified and an indication is given of how to obtain the necessary support or assistance in the community.
