PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credit with this unit standard will be able to prepare a workstation and client in readiness for a hot towel treatment. They will also be able to shave and trim facial hair. The learners will also be able to carry out an after care service thereby enhancing the service provision and after care treatment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the workstation and client for applicable service to be provided according to organisational and hygienic requirements.
  • Preparing and applying the hot towel treatment.
  • Shaving facial hair.
  • Trimming and cutting facial hair.
  • Completing and finishing off the service provided.
  • Discussing, explaining and applying the use of after care products and services.
  • Completing follow-up actions. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against the unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • After care products will include moisturizers and after shave products and/or sun protective cream/or after shave balm.
  • Clean towels are to used for every treatment.
  • Boiled water must be used for towels.
  • A new blade must be used for every new client.
  • Sterilized equipment is used for every client.
  • Tools cut throat razor, blades, clippers, scissors, and combs.

    The methods and procedures for applying a hot towel treatment is explained.

    A clean towel is used for each new hot towel treatment.

    The towel is prepared by heating it according to salon procedures.

    The hot towel temperature is checked before application.

    The hot towel is placed on the client's face in accordance with salon requirements.

    Clients head is positioned at the appropriate angle for effective shaving.

    Clients face is shaved using correct angle and direction.

    The shave is checked after completion to ensure all hair is removed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Loose hair is removed from the client.

    Trim and cut facial hair.

    Appropriate trimming and cutting tools are selected and prepared according to the service to be provided.

    The most suitable design is selected and communicated to the client.

    Clients head is positioned at the appropriate angle for effective trimming and cutting.

    Facial hair is trimmed and cut and design lines are followed according to design requirements.

    The facial hair trim and/or cut is checked to finish off the design.

    Loose hair is removed with a neck brush and gown is removed according to organisational procedures.
