PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners acquiring this standard will be learning towards obtaining National Certificate in Hairdressing Support: NQF Level 2 or are working within a hairdressing environment, where acquisition or competence against this standard will add value to learners job, or chances of finding employment.

This standard will allow the learner to advance to learning for a qualification at NQF level 3. This standard will enhance the social status within the hairdressing industry by having more competent people who now have both the practical ability and an enhanced understanding of shampooing and conditioning hair.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing the workstation for a shampoo or condition according to organisational requirements
  • Preparing client for shampoo or condition according to organisational requirements
  • Performing a shampooing and conditioning service
  • Finishing off shampoo or conditioned hair
  • Performing a scalp massage

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence against unit standards in mathematical, computer, numerical and communication studies at NQF Level 1 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Hygienic procedures are to be followed: personal cleanliness, sanitation of tools and work area.
  • Shampooing and conditioning of hair will include treating common scalp disorders (dandruff, oily or greasy scalp) common scalp conditions (split ends, damaged cuticle and beaded hair).

    Types of shampoo and conditioner are identified and explained with examples of products and support material.

    The workstation for a shampoo or condition is prepared with the applicable tools, products and materials.

    The record keeping documents are selected and made available according to organisational requirements.

    The workstation meets the required levels of hygiene according to organisational requirements.

    Prepare client for a shampoo or condition according to organisational requirements.

    The client's hair is analysed through questioning, visual and physical examinations and the findings are recorded on the analysis card.

    Perform a shampooing and conditioning service. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Shampooing and conditioning techniques are explained and demonstrated by giving physical examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The client is positioned at the basin to maintain clients comfort. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The appropriate shampoo and conditioner for the client's hair is selected from the available product range. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The selected shampoo and conditioner is applied according to manufacturers instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The scalp is massaged using petrissage and effleurage movements and the appropriate techniques. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The hair is rinsed to remove shampoo or conditioner, and towel dried. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Finish off shampoo or conditioned hair.

    The client is taken from basin to workstation.

    The hair is combed to disentangle wet hair.

    Appropriate record card is completed and client advised on homecare treatments, retail products and time schedule for follow up appointment.
