PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who are working within the medical field and are required to collect a sample for HIV testing. Before the client is given the opportunity to grant or withhold consent for the testing, a private and confidential discussion needs to take place in which information regarding HIV/AIDS and the implication of taking the test is shared.

This unit standard does not equip the learner to offer professional counselling to the client. If the need for professional counselling arises, the learner must refer the client to the appropriate professional person.

Qualifying learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Use counselling skills to inform patients/clients about HIV/AIDS and HIV testing
  • Assist them to make an informed decision about HIV testing 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Language and communication skills equivalent to NQF level 3
  • Competence in the unit standard ID 13915 - Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS in a workplace, and its effects on a business sub-sector, own organisation and a specific workplace - NQF level 3
