PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable learners to maintain and protect sound equipment 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners should have attained the outcomes of NQF Level 3 outcomes regarding mathematics, literacy, computers and music in the Further Education and Training (FET) Band, before embarking on learning towards this Unit Standard (since this Unit Standard builds on these competencies). Life Skills level 2 is recommended.

Adequate precautions are used to ensure protection from dust

Adequate precautions are used to ensure protection from moisture

Hazards to equipment are contained to prevent damage to sensitive components

Hazards in the environment are identified and contained to minimise safety threats to people and equipment

Adequate equipment separation is allowed for air flow and cooling, to avoid overheating of equipment 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
Fans are applied when specified to ensure cooling 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
Lights and power adapters are not placed where heating problems are encountered, so as to not promote overheating 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
Cables and wires are checked for overheating and exposure of live wires, to promote safety of equipment and people

Clean recording heads according to the set industry procedures.

A recommended (e.g. pure alcohol) cleaning agent is used to clean heads effectively and safely

Cleaning of component equipment heads is performed to ensure quality functioning

Irregularities to operation are remedied or reported to ensure successful maintenance

Equipment is correctly stored according to industry norms and standards.

Demagnetise tape heads to prolong functionality.

Machines being magnetised are off ppower to prevent damage to the heads

The correct demagnetisation tools and procedures are used to ensure complete demagnetising 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
Metal parts are not brought into contact with tolls during the demagnetising procedure to minimise damage

Demagnetising tools are held far clear from the vicinity of audio tape to prevent damaga or loss of audio information
