In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable learners to be competent in sending sound source and signal flow quality in an acoustic environment, and includes setting up equipment optimally for an acoustic environment.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners should have attained the outcomes of NQF Level 3 outcomes regarding mathematics, literacy, computers and music in the Further Education and Training (FET) Band, before embarking on learning towards this Unit Standard (since this Unit Standard builds on these competencies). Life Skills level 2 is recommended.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Acoustic sound separation can be performed by placement and/or acoustic screens

Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify sound in an acoustic environment.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The impact of reflections on acoustic materials is evaluated for effect on sound quality

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Materials are manoeuvred to compensate acoustically live or dead rooms

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Acoustically designed rooms are identified and assessed for effect on sound quality

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Acoustic applications are used to optimise sound quality

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Delay is determined and implications of delay analysed to assess effect on sound quality

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Choose and setup specified equipment and instruments in an acoustic environment.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Polar pattern selected ensures required source input direction

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Setup is in accordance with the needs of others and does not disrupt instrumentalists playing ability

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Selected acoustic instrument tuning is ensured for optimal sound quality

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Microphone is selected to assure signal compatibility and appropriate to instruments` tonal qualities

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
Sources of interference and/or unwanted noise are eliminated to ensure sound quality

SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Microphone the sound source from an amplified speaker in an acoustic environment.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Amplification source is set appropriately to specific requirements

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
