PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner who has achieved this unit standard will be competent in:

Applying, without supervision technology to the preparation of maize for milling to maintain consistent quality of finished products. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
To enter a learning programme for this unit standard or to be assessed against this unit standard, the learner is assumed to have:
  • Literacy, numeracy and communication skills at or equivalent to NQF level 2.
  • Successfully completed a course on Maize preparation technology.
  • Spent at least six months operating the specific mill in the work situation after successful completion of the above course.
  • An understanding of General Safety in the work place at NQF level 1. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this unit standard deals with the application of technology to the maize preparation process in both the silo and maize cleaning section.
  • The specific outcomes as reflected in this unit standard are performed without direct supervision or access to work site procedures and operating instructions except where the assessor deems them to be necessary.NB Unit standard GRM 012 applies only to Maize milling.

  • Selecting appropriate instruments and equipment according to work site and quality procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Assessors will observe, confirm and evaluate evidence that will indicate that learners have demonstrated competence in each of the specific outcomes. In this unit standard the following specific criteria should be used:
  • Job instructions, oral or written, are accurately followed and adhered to.
  • Appropriate tools, equipment and instruments are identified and selected according to work site procedures.
  • Application of sequence to flow in the maize preparation process and the consequences of not adhering to them is explained.
  • Consequence of not applying the correct amount of water and lying time to maize are explained.
  • Consequences of failure to recognize certain impurities and insects are explained. 

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply flow sequence technology to maize preparation.

  • Explaining the sequence of flow in the silo according to work site procedures by means of a sketch.
  • Explaining the sequence of flow in the cleaning and conditioning of maize section according to work site procedures, by means of a sketch.
  • Explaining the sequence of flow in the processing of maize impurities section, according to work site procedures, by means of a sketch.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Assessors will observe, confirm and evaluate evidence that will indicate that learners have demonstrated competence in each of the specific outcomes. In this unit standard the following specific criteria should be used:

    Assessors will observe, confirm and evaluate evidence that will indicate that learners have demonstrated competence in each of the specific outcomes. In this unit standard the following specific criteria should be used:
