PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

Use and apply drawing equipment and techniques, locate and apply abbreviations and formats for standard structural steel terms and common metric symbols to produce a range of detail drawings of basic structural steelwork assemblies which include the detailing of standard structural steel section shapes, views, cross-sections and plans, to the required scale and drawing size. In addition, learners will also be able to identify and detail basic types of connections for beams, columns and bracings based on given information and describe the need for tolerances between assemblies, connections and other fittings.

The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

Learners who master the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the production of quality detail drawings of basic structural steelwork assemblies and their connections in accordance with best practice industry norms and standards.
