PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard focuses on the role of a first line manager, section head, team leader, supervisor, shop steward, transformation committee member or Employment Equity committee member in supporting employees who are vulnerable or at risk. A manager in the context of this Unit Standard is the manager of a small business and first line managers of business units in medium and large organisations. The term business unit in this qualification implies a small business, cost centre, section or department.

It is envisaged that this Unit Standard will be used as part of Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP).

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Analysing events that could result in compromised employee wellbeing.
  • Analysing the need for a wellbeing intervention.
  • Proposing an intervention for a specific situation.
  • Monitoring, evaluating and reviewing an existing wellbeing intervention. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    There is open access to this Unit Standard. Learners should be competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is:
  • Events that could result in compromised employee well being include, but are not limited to, HIV/AIDS, conflict and diversity, addiction, dread disease, loss and trauma, abuse, anxiety and depression, relationships, disability, stress, transformation and change, illness.
  • The framework for an intervention should include a definition of the intervention, scope and eligibility, benefits offered, protocols and procedures, limitations, capacity and associated risk.
  • Statistical information may be obtained for Human Resources, consultation, counseling case studies, manager`s records/information, and impirical information from an intervention.
  • A strategy to manage compromised employee wellbeing should include arrangements for monitoring, evaluating and reviewing the intervention. As it is not possible to assess this stage in the strategy as part of the assessment of the unit standard learners, are required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to monitor, evaluate and review an intervention using an existing wellbeing intervention.

    1. The concept of compromised employee behaviour is explained within the context of organisational wellbeing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes, but is not limited to, productivity, performance, inter personal relationships and changes in behaviour.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Events that could result in compromised behaviour are identified in a specific environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The potential impact of four prevalent events on employees in a specific organisation is analysed and current trends in the organisation are benchmarked against the sector and national situation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Analyse the need for a wellbeing intervention in a specific business unit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The policy and procedure documents of a selected organisation are analysed and an indication is given of the manager`s role in applying policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. A needs analysis is conducted that includes management of troubled employees, current interventions and evaluation practices, consultation with stakeholders, outcomes of existing interventions, and contractual obligations in terms of wellbeing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Observed practice is benchmarked against written policies and procedures, legislative compliance and best practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Limitations or constraints on possible wellness interventions are identified with reference to practical implementation and personal capacity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Propose an intervention for a specific situation.

    1. The results of a needs analysis are used to inform the design of a wellbeing intervention.

    2. The framework for the intervention programme is created to address the identified needs.

    3. The proposed intervention is aligned to the organisation`s strategy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The need for confidentiality is explained and an indication is given of the consequences of breeching confidentiality or not following proper procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Monitor, evaluate, and review an existing wellbeing intervention.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The need for monitoring is explained and a plan is developed to monitor a specific intervention. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. A written report that includes qualitative and quantitative information on a wellbeing intervention is drafted for senior management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Administrative procedures required to manage information from a wellbeing intervention are explained for a specific intervention. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Statistical information from an intervention is interpreted to determine themes and trends and benchmarked against sector, national and international data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. An existing intervention is reviewed and recommendations are made to retain or redesign the intervention or aspects of the intervention. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA , or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures. Therefore, anyone wishing to be assessed against this Unit Standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution, which is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
