PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:

Compile and confirm quality plans, monitor and control the following quality processes in the fabrication, assembly and erection of structural steelwork assemblies:
  • Materials acquisition and the use of drawings for fabricating structural steelwork components and assemblies;
  • Fabrication and welding of structural steelwork components and assemblies in accordance with detail drawings and related specifications;
  • The preparation of steel assemblies as well as issue final release certification for dispatch to site;
  • The erection of structural steelwork assemblies in accordance with erection drawings and method statements;
  • The completion of corrosion protection specifications as well as hand over of steel structures to responsible parties in accordance with contract requirements.

    Learners who master the applied competence described in this unit standard will contribute to the implementation of enhanced quality control processes from the fabrication stage through to the on site erection of structural steelwork assemblies and handover of completed steel structures.

    In addition, the competencies acquired by learners will ensure that the high quality and safety standards demanded by the steel construction industry can confidently be applied and adhered to not only at national level but also in the global context.

    Material qualities include but are not limited to: various grades of steel and classes of bolts to different specifications.

    Size dimension includes but is not limited to: length, overall height, overall width, thickness of flange and web.

    Calibrated measuring equipment includes but is not limited to: Tapes, rules, squares, micrometers, dumpy levels, theodolites, blast profile measurement gauges, dry film paint thickness gauges, thermometer, humidity gauges.

    Format of drawing registers includes but is not limited to: Contract number, drawing number, description, dates of distribution, mass of assemblies.

    Format of material lists includes but is not limited to: Contract number, drawing number, description, size, quality and quantity of all materials required for each component on the drawing.

    Format of components parts lists includes but is not limited to: Contract number, drawing number, description, mark and quantity of component required to be delivered as called up on the drawing.

    Relevant standards include but are not limited to: Relevant portions of SANS 2001 CS1, AWS D1.1.02, SABS 0162 1993, SABS1431, SABS 1200HC, SABS1700.

    Welding process in accordance with AWS D1.1.02 includes but is not limited to: welding to approved weld procedures (WPS), using qualified (coded) welders for the procedures, storage, drying and handling of approved welding consumables.

    Preparation standards of steel for painting surfaces includes but is not limited to: SVENK STANDARD SIS 05 59 00 -1967.

    Fettling includes but is not limited to: removal by grinding or other means of all burrs, cutting defects, sharp edges, welding slag and splatter.

    Painting records include but are not limited to: Date, contract number, component mark, ambient temperature, humidity, blast profile, dry film thickness measured as often as specified for each component, paint batch or other defining information.

    Erection drawing includes but is not limited to: drawing/s suitably marked up with correct levels and erection marks of each steel assembly to enable erection to be undertaken.

    Erection method statement includes but is not limited to: A detailed statement of how the steel structure will be erected, a list of important allowable tolerances and other useful material that will assist the erector to safely erect the steel structure on site.

    Allowable erection tolerances include but are not limited to: Tolerances as defined in SANS 2001 CS 1 for line, level and straightness.

    Erection checks include but are not limited to: Line, level, straightness of components, all bolts inserted and tightening of bolts.

    Bolt tightening specifications include but not limited to: Bearing and shear bolts tightening with the correct equipment, pre-tension bolts tightened using the "part turn of nut method".

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Competence of assemblers to perform tack welds is evaluated and verified in accordance with the requirements of AWS D1.1 02, Clauses 4.1.3.2 and 4.18.1.3. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Drawings in the possession of assemblers are evaluated and conformance with requirements that assemblers work from approved and latest drawing revisions is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Earlier versions of drawings are collected, cancelled and removed from distribution. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Dimensional checks are conducted and conformance of assembled components in accordance with drawing specifications is verified. Conformance of assembled components includes but is not limited to: Components are assembled, holed within the relevant tolerances and marked in accordance with drawing specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Welding processes used to assemble components are evaluated and conformance of welding processes in accordance with AWS D1.1.02 is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Visual inspections of welds used for component assembly are conducted and conformance of welds in accordance with Clause 4.8.1 and Table 6.1 of AWS D 1.1.02 is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    7. Non-destructive examinations are conducted in accordance with designer/s requirements, examination results are interpreted and welds are certified as acceptable and/or recommendations are made that welds be repaired. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    8. Non-conforming components are isolated, re-welding processes are monitored and repeated as necessary until conformance of re-welded components in accordance with AWS D1.1.02, Clause 5.26 is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    9. Final dimension checks are conducted and conformance of assembled components in accordance with drawing and welding specifications is verified.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Fettling processes are checked and conformance with requirements for carrying out fettling is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Steel assemblies that have been treated for corrosion are evaluated and conformance with corrosion protection systems specified in Clause SIS 05 59 00-1967 is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Corrosion protection coating applied to steel assemblies is evaluated and conformance with manufacturer`s recommendations and requirements for completion of painting records is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Final inspections of each steel assembly are conducted and Release Certificates confirming that fabrication and corrosion protection are in accordance with drawing specifications are issued. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. The storage of painted assemblies is monitored and conformance with requirements that painted assemblies be stored above ground on suitable dunnage is verified.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Allowable tolerances of contractors responsible for erection of structural steelwork assemblies is evaluated and the capability of contractors to erect structural steelwork assemblies in accordance with the tolerances specified for the project is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Structural steelwork assemblies delivered to site are evaluated and conformance with component parts lists is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Delivered steelwork assemblies are evaluated for damage during transport and off-loading and instructions for damaged items to be repaired or replaced are issued to ensure conformance to specifications is maintained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Bolts and washers are inspected and conformance with bolt list specifications is verified. Conformance with bolt list specifications includes but is not limited to: The insertion of bolts and washers to the correct class and length, bolts and washers all face in the same direction and the nuts of vertical bolts face downward, unless specified otherwise.

    5. On site welding processes are monitored and evaluated and conformance with AWS D1.1.02 is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. The braced bay is inspected prior to the erection of any other steelwork and conformance that the braced bay has been erected in accordance with the Erection Method Statement (stable box) is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    7. Erected steel structures are inspected and evaluated and all bolts are tightened in accordance with specified requirements.

    1. Cleaning and touch-up operations to bolts and damaged primer systems are evaluated and conformance with manufacturer`s requirements and specifications for paint systems is verified.

    2. Corrosion protection systems are evaluated and conformance with manufacturers recommendations and requirements for completed paint/galvanising records is verified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Completed steel structure and quality documentation is handed over to client/s and confirmation that the fabrication and erection of steel structure/s conform with all specified requirements is stated to relevant parties in accordance with best practice procedures.
