PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner who has achieved this unit standard will be competent in:

Maintaining a rod maker cut-off unit to ensure optimum production performance of the unit. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
To enter a learning programme for this unit standard or to be assessed against this unit standard, the learner is assumed to have :

National Certificate in Cigarette Filter Rod Production - NQF Level 3.
OR
National Certificate in Cigarette Production - NQF Level 3

Mechanical background - NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
The learner is expected to perform the specific outcomes as reflected in this unit standard with minimal supervision, but with access to work-site procedures and operating instructions.

The scope of this unit standard deals with the repair and commissioning of cut-off units for filter rod makers and cigarette rod makers.

Cut-off unit components include, but are not limited to, hood safety lock, ejecting valve, knifes, grinding stones, ledgers, ledger arm, ledger holder, ledger pin, leaf spring, v-way and v-way brush, accelerators, belts and drive belts, fluted drum, fluted drum cover, fluted drum clutch, measuring tube, transfer drum, suction fan unit and blower fan unit.

Demostrate an understanding of fault finding on a rod maker cut-off unit.
