This unit standard will be useful to people who are working in a correctional or detention environment

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify cultural background
  • Assess cultural needs of inmates
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate implementation of cultural plans for inmates.

    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the establishment and maintenance of relationships with other cultures and life experiences.

    1. The inmate`s own culture is identified and described in terms of inmate and prison requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Age, class, gender, cultures, dominant cultural values, kinship, religious structures.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The inmate`s own life experience is identified and described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Family origins, history, and structure, community and recreational involvement, influence of socio-cultural structures, including kinship, religious structures, education and training.

    Assess cultural needs of prison inmates.

    1. Plan is implemented in accordance with inmate, identified individuals and agencies, and other prison staff within agreed timeframe and conditions.

    2. Plan is implemented in accordance with established enterprise procedures, protocols and legal requirements.

    Evaluate implementation of cultural plans for inmates.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Implementation of cultural plan is evaluated against planned objectives at intervals stated in the plan, the validity of the plan is determined, and any opportunities and needs for modification are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Evaluation methods are appropriate to the nature of the plan, and the type of evaluation information sought. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Plan modifications are made in accordance with the outcome of the evaluation and enterprise standards. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a candidate against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor
    with the relevant ETQA.
    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures. 

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    The following essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria:
  • Cultural differences and needs
  • How to obtain required information
  • Construction/framework of a cultural plan
  • Implementation, evaluation and modification of plans
    Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate`s performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.

    Note: The use of communication techniques and instruments are crucial to create awareness and to manage the cultural needs of inmates.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation.
    Note: The ability to relate to the cultural needs of inmates as a cluster of the criminal justice system within the wider society.

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • This unit standard is intended for but not restricted to workplace assessment. The range statements across the unit standard can be applied according to corrections specific equipment, procedures, and processes.
  • Performance in relation to the elements and performance criteria must comply with current legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Reference to terms, procedures and specifications in this unit standard includes documented procedures and specifications relevant to the workplace in which assessment is carried out.
  • All work practices shall meet documented corrections quality management requirements, including the documentation of activities, events, and decisions.
  • Assessment should be against the documented national policies and procedures and prison specific procedures.
