The person credited with this unit standard is able to work safely on board a fishing vessel. They are able to identify and handle hazards and risks in their own working area as well as extinguish and control a fire.

The following scope and context applies to the whole unit standard:
Procedures may include: Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus (CABA), procedures, standard operating procedures, manufacturer`s specifications, Maritime Fire Services training manual, and codes of practice. Various forms of water delivery may be: jet, spray, fog, and bucket. Appropriate foam may include: protein foams, aqueous film foaming foams, alcohol resistant foams, and high expansion foam. Regulations include: International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping, STCW 95, Proposed STCW for Fishing 11/2, 11/3, 11/4. Risks and hazards may include: switchboards, structures, procedures, substances, and physical features which by their description pose a threat to life and the ship. Risk areas include: galleys, cargo areas, fuel storage areas, paint and solvent storage areas, crew quarters, pump rooms, battery rooms, and engine rooms. Extinguish and control fire includes, but is not llimited to: the application of water, foam, and chemical agent to fires; attacking of fires using compressed gas and smothering devices. Fire suppression is carried out under the direction of fire suppression team leaders. |

Foam equipment: low expansion foam branches, medium expansion foam branches, high expansion foam registereds, installed or fixed foam systems, and portable extinguishers. Mechanical smothering devices: lids, cowls of deep fryers, fire blankets, and shutters. Installed fire suppression and detection: sprinklers and drenches, automatic and manual alarms, booster and hydrant systems, gas suppression systems, mechanical venting and air handling systems, evacuation alarm systems, and smoke and heat detectors. |
