PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to prepare equipment to load and off load cargo on a vessel. They will also be able to stow and secure cargo in stores on board a vessel.

All operations are carried out from instructions and under supervision.
Rules, regulations, statutory requirements, and their subsequent amendments include: International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping, STCW 95; general harbour regulations; Safe Working Load Regulations; and International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code. Cargo operations include: loading, discharging, and internal transfer of cargo and ballast. Securing cargo may be undertaken after loading and during passage when the situation demands additional security. Types of cargo may include: unitised, bulk containers, RoRo, deck cargo, refrigerated, dry, and liquid bulk, break bulk, vehicles, livestock, general cargo, and gas and hazardous goods. Stores include: paints, fuels, oils, spares, tools, cleaning products, and equipment. |

ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Cargo handling equipment includes, but is not limited to: cranes, derricks, and lifting devices; fork lifts; pumps and pipeline systems; hatch and door controls; dry bulk self-discharging systems; tank cleaning and draining equipment; hatch cleaning and draining systems; ballast systems; and hoists (interdeck). |

Actions taken in the event of irregularities, damage, or defects are appropriate to the individual`s responsibility and competence. Irregularities beyond the individual`s scope are reported to the supervisor within a time frame which enables the situation to be remedied. |

Reports of preparation conditions made to the appropriate authority are complete and in the format required by vessel procedures. |
