PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The person credited with this unit standard will be able to adjust and position fishing nets before deployment. They are also able to maintain, adjust and position netting gear during deployment, fishing and retrieval in order to optimise the catch.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Organise a work area to adjust nets.
  • Adjust net components to optimise the catch.
  • Position nets to optimise the catch.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Communication at NQF level 2 or equivalent competence.
  • Competence and experience equivalent to that of an Ordinary Seaman at NQF Level 2.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Organise a work area to adjust the nets.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A safe work area is identified and aspects affecting safety and efficiency are rectified in accordance with enterprise procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Clear instructions to the crew are given in order to cover the task and methods to be used.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Tools and equipment required for the task are available as and when required.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Equipment and techniques for slinging and moving nets are appropriate in terms of the planned operations.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Adjust net components to optimise the catch.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Components include but are not limited to: sweeps and bridles, netting material, flotation devices, ballast, hangings, by-catch reduction devices, connecting devices, knots, clips, flags, buoys and droppers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Net components are observed according to orders and to yield information on symmetry and effectiveness.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Observation includes but is not limited to: species composition of catch; quantity of catch per unit effort; quantity of catch in comparison to other vessels; ease of deployment and retrieval; shape of bridles, head ropes, foot ropes; wear of and damage to net components; quality of by-catch reduction systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Reasons for sub-optimal performance of nets are identified and rectified in accordance with enterprise procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Net components are adjusted, reconditioned or constructed to optimise gear performance in accordance with enterprise procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Position nets to optimise the catch.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
All relevant factors are taken into account in the development of a fishing strategy.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Factors include but are not limited to: current, wind, depth, proximity of hook-ups, proximity of other vessels, excessive by-catch, swimming speed of target species, symmetry of vessel to netting gear while operating.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The position and movement of the target school is monitored by visual and electronic means in accordance with enterprise procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The position of the nets is monitored and altered to optimise capture of the target school.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Monitoring may need to cover vertical and horizontal dimensions of gear; speed and direction of target in relation to gear; visual monitoring; electronic monitoring by means of echo sounder and/or sonar.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The position of vessel during the netting operation is monitored and adjusted to optimize the catch in accordance with the fishing strategy and enterprise procedures.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
Providers of learning towards this unit standard will need to meet the accreditation requirements of relevant ETQA.

    Moderation Option:

The moderation requirements of relevant ETQA must be met in order to award credit to learners for this unit standard.

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
The following essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that, for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate`s performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.
  • Guidance in correct operation of equipment is provided in The Code of Safe Working Practices for Seamen.
  • Prevention of pollution of the marine environment is governed by regulation, (MARPOL) legislated by the International Maritime Organisation.

    Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
Work effectively with other crew members when maintaining optimal positioning of the vessel.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING
Organise and manage oneself and one`s activities to assist in the adjustment, recinditioning or construction of line components.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information pertaining to the adjustment and positioning of nets.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING
Communicate effectively when reciving or giving clear instructions to crew members regarding tasks.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE
Use science and technology to assist in the monitoring of traps using electronic positioning fixing methods.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems where poor knowledge of adjusting and positioning nets leads to a poor catch.

    UNIT STANDARD ASSESSOR CRITERIA
Assessors should keep the following general principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented.
  • Make sure that evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, directness, authenticity, sufficiency, systematicity, openness and consistency.

The following particular issues should be taken into consideration when assessing against this unit standard:
  • All candidates to be assessed for this unit standard are required to provide evidence of competence (obtained by attending an approved course) in the following
  • Basic First Aid.
  • Fire Fighting
  • Evidence is required with regard to the candidate being medically fit.
  • The importance of both safety and due care and consideration for the environment is to be kept in mind when assessing a candidate for this unit standard.

  • REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.
