PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to manage structural construction activities in a safe, cost effective manner while complying to project specifications. This competence forms part of the Elective learning and represents a specific context of management, i.e. managing road construction activities in a civil engineering construction context. It contributes to the development of a professional community of Civil Engineering Construction Managers. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved. Its contribution to socio-economic transformation is that learners would be able to undergo RPL-assessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. The employability and career prospects of learners can therefore be enhanced by this qualification.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

  • Structural steel and concrete encountered in:
    (i) Minor Bridges
    (ii) Retaining structures
    (iii) Low and medium rise domestic, commercial and industrial buildings
    (iv) Low and medium rise Towers
    (v) Water retaining structures
    (vi) Minor Dams
  • The use of concrete includes an understanding of the processes and principles involved with the following: Mixing, Transporting, Placing and compacting, Curing, Testing, Finishing.
  • The erection, alteration / repositioning and dismantling of scaffolding:
    (i) Access during maintenance and construction activities.
    (ii) Load bearing during construction activities.
    (iii) Suspended during maintenance activities of structures.
  • The jacking of concrete structures. ( pipes, culverts, cast in-situ reinforced structural elements)
  • Rigging operations during structural steel and structural pre-cast concrete erection and placements.
  • Specialised maintenance and waterproofing activities pertaining to concrete.
  • Specialised maintenance activities pertaining to structural steel.
