PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Footwear processes. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to cut patterns and designs by hand or by using a range of machines and equipment through identifying and selecting appropriate machines and equipment, cutting patterns using a range of machines and equipment and moving sample pieces and patterns to various points in a process. Learners will also be able to select and prepare consumables as well as apply work instructions. Learners involved in pattern cutting will use this standard. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification and will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Learners will also communicate verbally and in writing at ABET Level 4. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
Machines used to cut patterns and designs will include:
  • Guillotine.
  • Binding.
  • Grading.
    Consumables used when cutting patterns and designs will include:
  • Pattern paper.
  • Pattern board.
  • Brass binding.
  • Plastic marker strips.
  • Masking tape.
  • Tacks.

    Identifying and selecting appropriate machines and equipment for pattern cutting.

    1. Machine and equipment specifications are defined and understood applying manufacturers specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Machines and equipment are identified and appropriately selected for pattern cutting in accordance with standard operating procedures and job cards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The functions of the relevant machines are demonstrated in compliance with machine manufacturers specifications and enterprise standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Cutting patterns for shoes using a range of machinery and equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Patterns are cut applying standard operating procedures to produce a range of footwear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Appropriate machinery and equipment are used relevant to the pattern cutting process applying job cards and standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Set of paper patterns, set of brass bound patterns and stitch markers are cut safely on a guillotine machine applying manufacturers specifications and safety legislation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Moving sample pieces and patterns to points in a process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Samples pieces and patterns are moved to various points in pattern cutting processes applying standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Sample pieces are moved in an orderly fashion and in accordance with enterprise policies and procedures from one point in the process to another. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Records that patterns are received at the appropriate departments in compliance with standard operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Selecting and preparing consumables for cutting patterns for footwear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Completed sample pairs are made up from a set of cut components in compliance with standard operating procedures and enterprise specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. All consumables used are presented in the production of these shoes as per enterprise specification sheets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Consumable specifications are identified and their purpose is clearly understood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Appropriate consumables are selected using job cards and standard operating procedures in preparation for pattern cutting processes. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Applying work instructions to cut a range of patterns for footwear. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Work instructions and specifications are applied where ranges of patterns for footwear are cut. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Instructions on job cards are followed sequentially so that defects are avoided at all times. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Shortfalls are recorded and reported to the appropriate person applying standard operating procedures.

    The relevant Sector Education and Training Authority or Education and Training Quality Assurance Body will carry our accreditation of learning against this standard. Assessment will be conducted by registered assessors.
