In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner working towards this standard will be learning towards a full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a cleaning services environment. Qualifying learners are able to crystallize polished marble and terrazzo floors in a commercial, industrial, pharmaceutical, food handling, domestic and health care cleaning environment.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The learner has the speaking and listening ability equal to NQF Level 1 Communication Skills standard and/or any other communication skill that will enable him/her to confirm the knowledge and skills required by this unit standard.
The learner will have completed the following unit standards:

Understand basic cleaning principles and perform basic cleaning tasks 12520.
Identify surfaces and soilage and its cleaning procedures 12515
Use chemicals in cleaning procedures 12517
Vacuum clean wet surfaces
Buff, burnish and scrub hard and resilient floors 12533
Operate a scrubbing / buffing and burnishing machine 12524
Wet mop floors 12521

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
1. The scope of this unit standard is for any person who crystallizes polished marble and terrazzo floors.
2. In the context of this unit standard a single disc machine is a heavy duty slow-speed machine with a maximum rotational speed of 140 r.p.m. Planetary scrubbing machines are also suitable for crystallizing floors.
3. The level and complexity assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the processes are moderate in range, are established and familiar and offer a clear choice of routine responses.

Range statements that refer to assessment in this Unit Standard:

1. Acrylic polymer refers to water-based acrylic polymers commonly used in sealing polished marble and terrazzo floors. All acrylic polymer coatings must be completely removed before any crystallization process can be undertaken.

2. Assessment criteria marked with * are assessed according to worksite procedures.

3. Crystallization refers to the chemical reaction between the crystallization chemical and the calcium carbonate in the marble or marble chips in terrazzo. The result of the combined chemical and mechanical / abrasive action is a smoothing and hardening of the floor surface. The term "vitrification" is sometimes used to describe the crystallisation process. The use of either crystallization or vitrification is acceptable in describing the process.

4. Flood rinses refers to the sufficient application of rinsing water to suspend and rinsethe grinding powder/paste crystallisation chemical residue from the floor surface.

5. Lippage refers to the height difference between the edges of marble or terrazzo tiles. Lippage is usually present to a greater or lesser extent on all newly laid marble or terrazzo tiled floors. The poorer the quality of workmanship in laying the tiles, the greater the degree of lippage. Excessive lippage refers to height differential in excess of 1 mm. The removal of excessive lippage is covered in the unit standard "Grind and polish marble, terrazzo, concrete and stone floors using diamond discs".

6. Maximum recommended scrubbing time refers to the maximum scrubbing time recommended by the manufacturer of the crystallization chemical. Exceeding this maximum time could result in damage to the floor surface.

7. Spray appliance refers to a spray bottle or spray appliance used to apply the crystallization chemical to the floor.

8. Stone Renew pad refers to the synthetic floor pad used in the first stage of crystallizing a floor using synthetic floor pads. It has a coarser texture than the Stone Polish pad that is used in the second stage.

9. Stone Polish pad refers to the synthetic floor pad used in the second stage of crystallizing a floor using synthetic floor pads.
