This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for sampling material from rail or road trucks using manual techniques.

    Prepare to sample the material.

    1. Hazards and risks pertaining to the sampling process are identified and explained with reference to team health and safety, and environmental impact. The appropriate preventative measures are listed and applied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The required personal protective and safety equipment is available, operational, fit for purpose and used in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The purpose of sampling in the production process is correctly explained with reference to process control, ore/product grades and physical properties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Knowledge pertaining to the effect of sampling on the accuracy and precision of the analytical results for the type of material being sampled is clearly explained.

    5. Procedures for securing samples and equipment against loss and damage are clearly explained.

    7. The rail/road trucks and material to be sampled are verified with reference to their unique identification and material type.

    8. The consequences of non-compliance with specified requirements are explained with respect to personal and team health and safety, impact on the environment, production, costs and lost time.

    1. The required personal protective and safety equipment is used and maintained in accordance with specified requirements.

    2. Equipment is used and cleaned in accordance with specified requirements. The importance of good housekeeping and cleanliness is explained with reference to the risk of contamination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Security procedures are adhered to as per specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The sample taken meets specified requirements as regards number of increments, grid pattern, size of increment and particle size distribution of the lot.

    5. The work is conducted to meet specified health, safety and environmental standards.

    7. The work is conducted to promote the achievement of production targets. The effect of non-compliance is explained in terms of production and the turnaround time of analytical results. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    8. On completion of the sampling process, the samples and data are forwarded to the next production step in accordance with specified requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    1. Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    2. Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.

    3. Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

    4. NOTES TO ASSESSORS

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well documented principles of assessment: appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent
