PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is aimed at people who work in or intend to work within a chemical industry and are required to transfer materials.

Learners who acquire the outcomes of this standard will know about and be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of transferring materials in bulk
  • Prepare to transfer materials
  • Transfer product and or materials to vessels and containers
  • Carryout the post transferring activities 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following learning is assumed to be in place. Where a learner does not have all the appropriate components appropriate adjustments in the learning programme are needed.
  • Basic safety, health and environmental issues
  • Use of language and communication as applied in the chemical industry and the workplace where the learning takes place
  • Introductory knowledge of technology (process chemistry and associated technology) used in the chemical industry

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    1. Reasons for transferring materials may include storage, processing, manufacture and transport of chemical products needed to complete the manufacturing or processing operation.

    2. Components of equipment or a transfer system include:

    Hoists, cranes, conveyors, buckets, launders/shutes pipelines, hoses couplings, valves, pumps, instruments (pressure, level flow indicators), control equipment Transferring systems may include fixed installations or loose hoses equipment.

    3. Consequences of transferring solids may include potential damage to equipment, hazards and risk to environment caused by the use of equipment or procedures that are not adequate to handle the material transferred

    4. State of equipment may include contents, hygiene/contamination, serviceability and availability

    5. Preparation of equipment to be used may include making connections; confirming integrity of transfer circuit and that vessels (vessels also refers to hoppers and other containers) can accommodate quantities to be transferred.

    6. Documents included work permits, instructions, production plans, control logs
  • All preparatory work must be carried out in accordance with safety requirements which include compliance with instructions, use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety measurement equipment such as explosive/toxic gas meters, and documentation recording compliance with instructions, condition of bunds, ventilation, fire fighting protection equipment.
  • Hazards include pressure, moving equipment, electrical, chemical (explosive, corrosive), heat, process conditions

    Instructions as referred to in this unit standard include verbal, written, site specific, standard operating, specific and other instructions.

    Prepare to transfer bulk material.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. The instruction to transfer material is explained confirming which liquid must be transferred, where it must be moved to and how it must be moved. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The material to be transferred is identified and the availability of an adequate quantity to comply with the instruction is confirmed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. The state of the vessels, transfer and other transferring equipment used in the transferring activity is ascertained in accordance with the instruction to transfer material. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Equipment to be used for transfer is prepared to carry out the transfer of material in accordance with instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Documentation required for then transferring activity is completed correctly, in accordance with site specific requirements.

    6. Hazards regarding the transferring operation and related environment are identified and precautions are explained in terms of best practice and site specific instructions.
