PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This standard is in the elective category of the NQF Level 2 National Certificate in Clothing Processes. Learners assessed competent against this standard will be able to receive materials, distribute materials, prepare cutting tables, lay out fabric and sort and fuse cut work. Learners will also be able to cut basic single lays. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners will have attained an ABET Level 4 qualification and will be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Learners will also communicate verbally and in writing at ABET Level 4. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
This standard will include operations to prepare for cutting for garments produced for the following:

  • Leisurewear.
  • Intimate / sleepwear.
  • Swimwear / actionwear.
  • Knitwear.
  • Hosiery.

  • Linen.
    Fabric types will include:
  • Wovens.
  • Non-wovens.
  • Warp knits.
  • Weft knits.
  • Knitwear.
  • Lace.
  • Elastics.
    Fabrics include filament or spun yarns at a variety of weights, finishes and structures.

    Select and fuse appropriate parts in order to demonstrate the knowledge of fusibles i.e. temperature, pressure and time and machine settings.

    Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing passing on appropriate information and compiling reports to ensure successful completion of processes to prepare lays and tables.

    Perform a lay using correct equipment relating to appropriate fabric.

    Demonstrate the ability to sort out cut work according to specifications.

    Understand the world as a set of related systems thereby being able to relate to the pattern making process leading to requirements of cutting and sewing practices and then finishing, as a cycle of processes.
