PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable Tilers to apply screeds to concrete floors and steps, to lay screed to a shower floor, to plaster walls and columns, and to repair cracked and damaged plaster. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
1. All completed surfaces to be straight and even i.e. free of bumps or hollows, and free of tool marks.

2. Methods of curing surfaces include applying water or curing membrane/compound.

3. Float finishes include steel and wood float finishes.

Prepare floors and apply screeds to floors and steps.

1. A sand (leveling) screed is mixed and applied to a concrete floor. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
2. Concrete steps are screeded. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
3. A completed surface is covered or allowed to cure slowly by applying water. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
4. Completed surfaces are protected from damage.

1. Plaster screed is applied to entire wall and column surfaces, according to line, level and specification thickness tolerances.

1. The outlet is plugged to prevent entry of screed or grout.

2. The floor is prepared and screed is applied with a fall towards the outlet in accordance with the specifications and drawings.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard. 

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
Qualifying learners understand and can explain:

1. The function, properties, and application of screeds and granolithic finishes.
2. The mix proportions of screeds and grano, and the effects of cement/water ratios on strength.
3. The methods for achieving a well-compacted substrate layer under paving, and the identification and selection of suitable gravel material to produce this layer.
