The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with expertise and critical knowledge in arts and design and enable them to undertake research at the most advanced academic level that will culminate into submission, assessment and acceptance of a thesis. A qualified learner will be able to demonstrate high-level of research capability and will be able to make a significant and original academic contribution at the frontiers of art and/or design.

Rationale:
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Art and Design provides learners with expertise and critical knowledge in arts and design. Over the past decade, there has been an increase in expertise and considerable development of supervisory capacity due to appointment of skilled supervisors with PhD's and the development and further studies of existing staff. This qualification will offer an opportunity for learners to undertake research at the most advanced academic level that will culminate into the submission, assessment and acceptance of a thesis. Such candidates will demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution at the frontiers of design. It will also strengthen research capacity and enable increased research output. This will also benefit in particular, learners who foresee careers as lecturers or researchers. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The Institution accepts RPL as an integral part of education and academic practice. It is acknowledged that all learning has value, and the Institution accepts the challenge to assess prior learning and award credits, as aligned to the institution's RPL policy to promote lifelong learning.

    QUALIFICATION RULES 
    This qualification consists of a dissertation at Level 10 totalling 360 Credits. 

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Undertake research at the most advanced academic level culminating in the submission, assessment and acceptance of a thesis, which in the case of a practice based submission may be accompanied by creative work such as designed artefacts, public performances, public exhibitions or other practice based outputs. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
  • High-level research capability is demonstrated.
  • A significant and original academic contribution at the frontiers of art and design are made.
  • Identify, address and manage ethical issues and advance processes of ethical decision-making are demonstrated.
  • New methods, techniques, processes, systems, technologies or theories are developed in original, creative and innovative ways that are appropriate to specialise and complex contexts.
  • The submission that satisfies peer review and merits publication or exposure in the public domain is produced.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Assessment of the qualification is based on the submission of the thesis as a summative assessment. Continuous feedback from the supervisor with the learner will be conducted. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The development of the qualification was informed by research into a number of international Doctoral qualifications, which include The Doctor of Philosophy (PhDs) in Art and Design offered by the Bauhaus-Universitt Weimar in Germany, the Birmingham City University, Kingston University in the United Kingdom, AUT School of Art and Design in New Zealand, Monash University and University of the New South Wales in Australia.
