The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to provide learners with knowledge of Administrative Information Management and equip them with problem solving. Qualified learners will be competent in performing innovative integrated Knowledge Management functions, Administrative functions and responsibilities and who will be able to create new information, repackage and transform existing information into knowledge. They will also be able to formulate, undertake and resolve more complex theoretical and practice-related problems and tasks through the selection and use of appropriate methods and techniques.

Rationale:
The Advanced Diploma in Administrative Information Management is designed to provide learners with integrated knowledge and equip them with skills that will enable them to manage administrative information. This qualification is developed to meet the needs for a specific career path in the administrative business environment. This qualification is suitable for learners who have completed a Diploma in this field and who are already working at operational levels within the industry. It involves specific knowledge and skills to perform at supervisory and managerial levels within multi-disciplinary administrative environments. It is therefore suitable for Continuing Professional Development purposes because it enhances deep and systematic understanding of contemporary business operations which include independent decision-making, analytical approaches and relevant cutting edge technologies, thus contributing to the benefits of the society and the economy. This qualification also offers learners access to Postgraduate studies. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
As per institutional policy, credits towards this qualification may be obtained by means of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). In addition candidates who do not meet the minimum entrance requirements but who can demonstrate satisfactory levels of competence in the field may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning and may be granted entry to the qualification on this basis.

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • A Diploma at Level 6 or a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
  • The internal and external factors affecting the strategy are analysed.
  • The selection and implementation of corporate strategy is demonstrated.
  • The Marketing, Finance/Accounting, Research and Development and Management Information System (MIS) issue are incorporated in the development of a corporate strategy.
  • Knowledge of the review, evaluation and control of strategy is demonstrated.

  • Dynamics affecting employee behaviour in an organisation are analysed.
  • Ethical behaviour and diversity management in an organisation is analysed.
  • Leadership behaviour and change in the organisation is analysed.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3:
  • Workflow Management Systems are applied.
  • Websites are designed and managed.
  • Enterprise Collaboration Systems are identified, sourced and utilised.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:
  • Knowledge of the steps in the research process is demonstrated.
  • Different research designs are identified and linked to suitable research studies.
  • Knowledge of writing a proposal is demonstrated.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Formative assessment strategies are continuous and aimed at giving learners feedback on their progress in the achievement of learning outcomes as well as to integrate theoretical and practical competence. Such strategies include informal assignments, discussions, case studies, informal tests and tutoring.

    Learners may also be assessed through observation during classes. Summative assessment strategies are aimed at judgment of the learning in relation to the Exit Level Outcomes of the qualification. Such strategies include examinations, reports, projects or equivalent, such as a portfolio of evidence which is representative of a selection of the outcomes.

    The outcomes of the formal assignments and tests will contribute to a cumulative class mark as per pre-arrangement with the learners. In the formal assignments and tests, and in the respective examinations learners will have to demonstrate the ability to communicate and integrate knowledge of the key issues, highlighted in the respective modules, and identify and resolve typical problems in the subfields as indicated. This will require critical and creative thinking as well as the ability to make practical applications of the learning outcomes as indicated in the module descriptors. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    Qualifications offered by other international Higher Education institutions were analysed and international best practices were taken into consideration.

    The Advanced Diploma in Administrative Information Management was compared to qualifications, outcomes and purposes for business administration and information management in higher education institutions in Malaysia, Namibia, USA and Australia. South Africa is at the cutting edge in this field, showcasing various additional value- added modules which are introduced even at undergraduate level which reflects diversity in terms of ancillary modules. A direct comparison of the Title, Exit Level Outcomes and Assessment Criteria was undertaken with each. It seems that most of the international administrative management qualifications that are similar to our qualification are pitched at undergraduate, degree and postgraduate levels and many of those that are at undergraduate level are often aimed at candidates who have work experience.

    1. The Namibian University of Technology (NUST) in Namibia, offers a similar Bachelor Degree in Office Management and Technology (4 years) and Diploma (3 Years) in Office Management and Technology. The exit level of the Bachelor Degree qualification compares very well with the Advanced Diploma in AIM as they also offer Business Management/Administration, Information Administration IV, Administrative Office Management IV, Research Methodology, Administrative Organisational Behaviour. The content of the programme modules is similar to modules offered in the Advanced Diploma in AIM.

    2. Universitiy Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Koala Lampur, Malaysia Faculty of Business Management offers a Bachelor in Office Systems Management aligned in the area of management and administration. They are offering Administrative Operations Systems, Networking and Telecommunications systems, Organisational Behaviour, International Business, Project Management, Research Methodology, Business Process and Change Management. The modules content of the programme is similar to modules in the Advanced Diploma in AIM.

    3. The Utah Valley University (UVU) in Utah in the United States of America offers a Certificate in:
    Administrative Information Support, a Pre-Major in Administrative Information Management (AIM) which articulates into the Bachelor of Science in Information Management. The Bachelor of Science in Information Management is designed to prepare students to supervise and manage the operations and personnel of business offices. Courses include instruction in employee supervision, budgeting, scheduling and coordination, office systems operation and maintenance, office records management, public relations, project management, accounting, decision making, and human resources. They are offering the following Financial Accounting, Web Application Design, Systems Analysis and Design, Global Ethical and Professional Perspectives in IS and IT, Systems Design and Implementation, Fundamentals of Computing Technologies, Information Workflow Management, Business Law, Organizational Behaviour, Project Management, Advanced Project Management, Business Intelligence Systems, Data Science and Big Data Analytics. The content of some modules in the exit level of the programmme is similar to modules in the Advanced Diploma in AIM.

    4. The University of South Australia business school offers a Bachelor of Business in Information Strategy and Management. They offer the following modules: Business and Society, Principles of Economics, Management and Organisation, Business Operations, International Business Environment, Accounting Principles for Business Decisions, Business Intelligence, Professional Development in Business, Information Technology Strategy and Management, Business Law, Design Thinking and Digital Innovation, Information Technology Fundamentals, Systems Analysis, Project Management, Service Management and Integration, Enterprise Systems. The content of the modules at exit level of the programmme is similar to that of modules offered in the Advanced Diploma in AIM.

    The qualifications that have been selected are the most closely aligned in terms of their being qualifications with comparable learning outcomes. The international qualifications with which this qualification was compared have the similar themes and purposes as this qualification but seem to offer it more compartmentally. Thus, although the content is similar, the structure of the qualification differs. The qualification titles are reflected differently in different countries although the content and approach are similar.
