The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
To familiarise learners with the content and theories of Economics at the intermediate level, and to provide them with a deeper grasp of Economics at Level 8, as well as to enable them to place new knowledge in context and to use appropriate methods for seeking resolution of problems.

To provide learners with a variety of basic scholarly and intellectual competencies, including the ability to question critically the assumptions of a limited range of theories and authorities, and to develop an understanding of elementary research methods used within Economics.

To equip learners with the ability to give an accurate account of scholarly positions and the competence to express their own opinions clearly and coherently, both in written and oral communication.
  • To provide learners with a well-rounded and broad education in Commerce topics, thus preparing them for a wide range of professions crucial to the welfare of society.
  • To produce learners who are able to think laterally, critically and creatively.
  • To produce learners who are prepared for life-long learning.
  • To produce learners who understand the principles of, and are capable of critical citizenship.
  • To produce learners with skills and the ability to propose a basic research project, to execute, analyse and report on it in a logical and knowledgeable manner.

    Rationale:
    This learning programme is relevant to the needs of the South African economics market by providing graduates who will be trained to work in economics contexts. The qualification will help achieve the objectives of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) by facilitating access, mobility and progression on a training and career path in Economics. The Bachelor of Commerce Honours (Economics) is a qualification that instils a research capacity in graduates that will allow them to continue their career paths academically as well as professionally. It aims to contribute not only to individual personal development but also to the social and economic development of the nation at large, taking into consideration the existing needs of the workplace.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated Assessment:
    The assessment approach is an integrated approach horizontally and vertically to ensure that Exit Level Outcomes have been met. Formative assessment is carried out using assignments and presentations Formal written tests together they contribute 60% towards the final mark Summative assessment, which consists of a three-hour examination paper, is conducted at the end of each semester, and it contributes 40% towards the final mark. Assessment is in alignment with the University Rules and the assessment policy of student learning.

    This qualification allows possibilities for both horizontal and vertical articulation.
