PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with knowledge and skills that will prepare them to operate as a Vehicle Trimmer.

A qualified learner will be able to:
  • Refurbish vehicle interior components or parts.
  • Maintain vehicle trimming tools and equipment.
  • Manufacture components and covers for vehicle interiors according to specifications.

    Rationale:
The Occupational Certificate in Vehicle Trimming is designed to equip learners with skills necessary to maintain vehicle interiors by applying vehicle trimming skills to manufacture, remove and renew vehicle components. A Vehicle Trimmer maintains vehicle interiors according to manufacturing and/or customers' specifications. Vehicle trimming is regarded as one of the trades with no formal training and/or qualification on the African continent. This qualification has been developed as a response to that need. This qualification is aimed to assist learners who aspire to pursue a career in vehicle trimming and related fields. Qualified learners are likely to be employed in the motor, marine, aviation and upholstery related industries. This qualification will enable qualified learners to pursue higher level qualifications which will enable them to occupy higher level positions within supervisory, management, training and development positions in this field. Qualified learners will benefit from this qualification as they will become, skilled, competent, independent and employable. Application of the acquired skills by trained learners in the workplace will improve productivity and growth within the sector and thus positively influence the economy at large.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The qualification can be obtained through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for those learners who have acquired knowledge and skills; either formally or informally. RPL for access to the external integrated summative assessment: Accredited providers and approved workplaces must apply the internal assessment criteria specified in the related curriculum document to establish and confirm prior learning. Accredited providers and workplaces must confirm prior learning by issuing a statement of result or certifying a work experience record.

RPL for access to the qualification: Accredited providers and approved workplaces may recognise prior learning against the relevant access requirements.

    Entry Requirements:
  • NQF Level 1 with Mathematics and Science.

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY
Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO):
The ANZSCO offers an occupational qualification in Vehicle Trimmer. The purpose of this qualification is to enable learners to install, repair and replace the interior trim of vehicles such as seats, linings, floor coverings and door trims. Other tasks include, constructing framework sections in metal, wood, fibreglass and other materials using shaping machines and cutting and welding equipment.

    Conclusion:
This qualification compares favourably with the qualification offered by the ANZSCO. The competencies covered in the qualification compare favourably to those that are covered in the South African Vehicle Trimmer occupational qualification. Learners are equipped with skills to enable them to modify and assemble vehicles according to special requirements and install internal trim in vehicles such as lining, floor coverings and armrests.
