The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
The purpose of the Diploma in Transportation Management is to develop learners with a wide range of vocational and industry-specific intellectual competencies, knowledge and practical skills. This will enable them to critically explain and apply multi-modal transportation management principles, processes and procedures.

They will also be able to take decisions in the context of a transport management organisation, interpret relevant information and produce innovative responses based on informed judgment on concrete but often unfamiliar problems. The qualification provides the learner with a range of fundamental knowledge and competencies in fields such as business communication, information systems, industrial relations and project management. Furthermore, it also provides the learner with detailed knowledge about general management principles and specific multi-modal transport management principles. This qualification is relevant and responsive to the needs of the South African Transport Management industry.

Rationale:
The qualification has an industry orientation and provides a learning opportunity to entry-level employees in the transportation management industry to develop relevant knowledge and skills. This qualification covers all the major functional areas of a Transport or Logistics company and will enable learners to specialise in a particular transport mode. Successful completion of this qualification will enable the learners to proceed to an Advanced Diploma in Transportation at Level 7.

Transportation of both freight and passengers forms the backbone of the economy. The growth of the economy is hinged on an efficient, reliable and demand-responsive transportation system. It is a fact that there is a shortage of expertise in the transport sector in South Africa.

Learners will be equipped with the knowledge that enable them to pursue careers in various sectors of the main modes of transport namely road, air, maritime, rail and pipeline transport, where they are engaged in operational activities such as scheduling, stock control, and supervision. Also, there are also employment opportunities manufacturing, distribution and service organisations. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is done following the institution's RPL Policy. In cases of learners not complying with the formal entry requirements, RPL will be determined following the policy and guideline of the institution concerning the recognition of other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. Recognition takes place only where prior learning corresponds to the required National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level, and in terms of applied competencies relevant to the content and outcomes of the qualification. Through Recognition of Prior Learning, learners may gain access, or recognition of status, on condition that they continue their studies at the institution.

  • Explain the importance of applicable transport legislation within the transportation management context.

  • Explain correctly, the processes of gathering, integrating, interpreting and presenting of related information.
  • Distinguish the relationship and impact between the different fields within Transportation Management and Logistics Management are clearly.
  • Organise and co-ordinate the resources and opportunities in the Transportation Management field effectively.
  • Identify transportation management information are correctly and correctly select Information appropriate to the task.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the Exit-Level- Outcomes, will be done by completion of two individual assignments and one written examination per module and also a qualification Project in the 2nd year. A variety of summative assessment opportunities is required and may include tests, portfolios, practical demonstrations, written and oral examinations, open-book examination etc. Self-assessment questions at the end of each learning unit offer learners the opportunity to assess whether they understand the unit entirely before attempting the next learning unit. Assignments per module consisting of short questions, multiple-choice and in some modules case study based assignments one examination per module. Learners are encouraged to join study groups to support each other and find collaborative solutions to practical problems. An essay is to be completed where learners have to investigate practices within the working environment.

    INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification has been benchmarked against qualifications offered by two international universities. Although the modules of these qualifications differ from the modules offered by the institution, the purpose and outcomes of these qualifications compare favourably with the qualification offered by the institution.

    The University of Sydney in Australia offers a Graduate Diploma in Transportation Management. Although not on the same level as the Diploma offered by the institution, the range of topics (content) in the Graduate Diploma is similar to that of the Diploma in Transportation Management. The Graduate Diploma aims to provide the learner with core knowledge in a chosen study area to develop specialist skills and knowledge to career prospects with a focus on policy and strategic planning. The Diploma in Transportation Management focuses more on a wide range of vocational and industry-specific intellectual competencies, knowledge and practical skills.

    The Hong Kong University Space School of Professional and Continuing Education in China offers a Professional Diploma in Logistics and Transport Management which is similar to the Diploma in Transportation Management about the purpose of the qualification. However, there is a greater focus on professional knowledge in logistics and transport management while the focus of the Diploma in Transportation Management is on a wide range of vocational and industry-specific competencies, knowledge and practical skills.
