| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Purpose:
The purpose of the Diploma in Sport Management is to deepen students' knowledge and understanding of theories, methodologies and practices related to Sport Management. This qualification will breach the current skills gap by positively impacting on the management of sports organisations, on the integration of sports within the community to promote healthy lifestyles and on the ability of individuals in the community to host international events. The Diploma in Sport Management will accommodate individuals and sport professionals who are interested in contributing to Sport Administration and Management. Rationale: The Diploma in Sport Management is developed to equip student with knowledge and skills that will enable them to develop tools and techniques that are required in the management of sport, fitness and recreation enterprises, sports organisations and individuals involved in sport and fitness activities. This qualification will prepare students to promote good governance, professionalism and expertise within the sport, fitness and recreation environment Sport has become professional and professionalism in Sport requires the professional management of sport. The programme aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge to become a Manager of sport on local, regional and national level. In order to be successful, students should have a keen interest in sport, but of greater importance is his or her ability to develop as a Manager. A successful student will be able to follow a career in Managing Sports/People/Programmes, Sport Consultation, Sport Entrepreneur. The qualification trains competent professionals in Sport Management who will assist in promoting the standard of sport and encourage sport participation in South Africa, as well as develop the necessary manpower needed in Sport for diverse settings-Schools, Clubs and Sports Federations. |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) accepts Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as an integral part of education and academic practice. It is acknowledged that all learning has value and the UJ will endeavour to assess prior learning and award credit where relevant. Prospective students may apply for RPL by following the UJ procedures. There are no differences in the RPL processes and procedures (as per policy) between the distance education mode and the existing accredited qualifications that the institution offers. The following principles are relevant: > Is conducted after payment of the prescribed fees in accordance with the policy and guidelines of the University. > Is based on other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. > Is considered only where prior learning corresponds to the required NQF-Level. > Takes place where prior learning in terms of applied competencies is relevant to the content and outcomes of the programme. > Is considered in terms of an assessment procedure that includes a motivated recommendation by an assessment panel to the Dean's Committee. > Is finally decided upon by the Dean's Committee. | Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 1:
Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 2: Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 3: Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4: Integrated Assessment: Formative and summative assessments will be integrated to provide a coherent indication of the candidates' ability, skill and experience. Formative assessment practices will include formal and informal class tests, module or semester tests (where applicable), projects and practical assessments. Summative assessment will be done on completion of each module to assess the achievement of outcomes and may include written examinations, practical examinations, and project assessments. Integrated assessment approaches are required. These assessments are focused on assessing the achievement of the Exit-Level Outcomes holistically, i.e. in groups rather than individually, and will be done where possible/manageable by means of written examinations, practical examinations, project evaluations and final examinations in each module, including project reports and presentation assessments. |
| INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
| The HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE) offer an Advanced Diploma in Recreation and Sports Management. This qualification aims to develop the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge required to work as a high level Sport and Recreation Administrator or Junior Manager within the industry. Learners will be able to assess the individual/community requirements, to deliver the services in a safe, supportive and equitable manner and be able to manage recreation and sport projects. HKU SPACE collaborates with a wide range of academic institutions globally (in the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States of America, Mainland China and Hong Kong).
The International Career Institute (ICI) offers the Diploma in Sports Management. The ICI is accredited and recognised by the International Association of Private Career Colleges (IAPCC). IAPCC accreditation ensures that the Institute has met IAPCC benchmarks in the areas of course content, course delivery, learner assessments, administration and the tutorial faculty. The ICI is also accredited and recognised by the International Accreditation and Recognition Council (IARC). IARC is a system that provides recognition, approval and endorsement of institutions provided they meet and satisfy a set of academic, ethical and operational standards. The Advanced Diploma enables the learners to apply a significant range of principles and techniques across various contexts and functions. Learners are involved in significant judgments, planning, and leadership/guidance functions related to workplace products, services, operations or procedures. This qualification compares with the others as indicated. These qualifications aim to prepare learners to pursue a variety of career opportunities including team and league management, marketing and promotion, national and provincial sport organisations, recreation facilities programming and athletic departments. |
