PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
Purpose:
The purpose of this qualification is to supply the nature conservation industry with competent Nature Conservators and Resource Managers who are able to manage a conservation team efficiently. Learners achieving this qualification will be competent to manage natural resources sustainably, interpret the environment, enforce the appropriate legislation and demonstrate basic knowledge of research. Rationale: To cater for the manpower needs of the various conservation organisations, and to provide for self-employment opportunities by providing students with both a theoretical and practical background in the various fields of expertise. This background will enhance the student's competence as a Conservator and improve the productive worth to potential employers, to the natural environment and to the country. This is a functional and well recognised qualification, which is a prerequisite for appointment and promotion as a Nature Conservator. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Students are provided with the specific outcomes of the programme and required to provide a portfolio of evidence supporting their application and providing documented support (reports, certificates, line manager references, etc.) for having met all the outcomes. This evidence is reviewed by an examiner and moderator before a specific recommendation regarding the application is tabled before the Faculty Board and the Board's recommendation is then tabled before Senate for approval. Entry Requirements: Selection criteria for admission to the National Diploma: Nature Conservation are based on both academic prowess and field experience. Students wishing to be admitted to this National Diploma are required to be in possession of a National Senior Certificate as certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50-59%) or better in Life Sciences and English Home Language or English First Additional Language. In addition an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better will be required in an additional two National Senior Certificate (NSC) 20-Credit subjects. For those students with a Senior Certificate (or equivalent), the requirement is a minimum of a "D" symbol in English and Biology on the Higher Grade. A pass mark in Mathematics, Physical Science, or History/Geography will be a recommendation. In addition, a student's completed application form must be accompanied by a Curriculum Vitae detailing interests, hobbies, field experience and references indicating the candidate's working success, enthusiasm and suitability for the course. |
