Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
This qualification is intended for learners who will make a significant and original contribution to knowledge in a specialised area of technology. They will have a high level of overall knowledge in that specialised area ranging from fundamental concepts to an advanced theoretical or applied knowledge.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

Entry Requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Master of Engineering NQF Level 9.

    The following components are compulsory:
  • Write a reasoned and appropriate research proposal.
  • Gather information pertinent to the research area.
  • Analyse and evaluate information.
  • Generate original research methods and/or analytical methods for the design of systems, processes or components Perform and manage the research.
  • Facilitate the transfer of technological knowledge in academic institutions. 

  • EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    1. Understand the research field and implications sufficiently..
    2. Locate appropriate and wide sources.
    3. Categorise information is appropriately categorised.
    4. Deal with the contradictions and omissions in theory and research practice.
    5. Write the thesis coherently according to national and institutional guidelines for Level 10. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    The following associated assessment criteria apply across all Exit Level Outcomes
  • The proposal is feasible.
  • Justification for the proposal is given.
  • The research proposal is relevant and applicable.
  • The proposed research involves the development of original and innovative theory and practice in complex technological situations.
  • The proposal is independently formulated.
  • Information is analysed and choices are made and justified as to relevance.
  • Information is synthesised into a coherent whole.
  • Information is gathered independently from supervision.
  • Information is translated into appropriate forms.
  • Information is evaluated, and informed and innovative recommendations concerning the research are put forward. Methods are original or are innovative refinements of existing methods.
  • All major related research methods are discussed and compared to the chosen method.
  • The merits of the chosen method are defended.
  • The research process is successfully carried out independently from the supervisor.
  • An accredited journal accepts a paper to which the learner has substantially contributed.
  • Learning by peers is facilitated through oral and poster presentations and/or in-house seminars.
  • Research at lower levels is supervised.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Assessment across the qualification forms an integral part of the teaching and learning process. In achieving the learning outcomes, learners are required to comply with the minimum assessments set for the level of the qualification, as per the Institution's Assessment Policy. Assessments vary depending on the module and the outcomes of the module; however, all modules are formatively and summatively assessed. The assessment of theoretical modules is usually in the form of assignments, practical's and written tests or examinations. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    This qualification compares with the international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered.
