The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To offer a general Master's Degree in law, following upon on an Honours Degree in Philosophy for the purpose of specialised research towards a dissertation in philosophy either as a complete research project or together with coursework. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning.

Entry Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Philosophy Honours, Level 8.
    Or
  • Bachelor Honours Degree, Level 8 in an appropriate discipline.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:
    1. Expert and an in-depth knowledge of philosophy is demonstrated in all projects and processes engaged in.
    2. Theoretical foundations of philosophy are understood and applied.
    3. The relevant knowledge, skills and values are combined and applied consistent with an advanced level.
    4. A research proposal is developed and presented independently.
    5. Knowledge and generic research skills are expressed in philosophy in an integrated, logical and coherent manner through written assignments.
    6. Abstract thoughts are expressed in a logical and coherent way.
    7. Delimitation, literature searches, logical analysis, balanced interpretation, structuring and expressing is conducted through consistent use of a system of references.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Integrated Assessment appropriately incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved.

    Tests, assignments and examinations are utilised in the case of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) by coursework and research. In the case of an M Phil by dissertation only the dissertation is assessed formatively as it is being compiled and summatively on completion.
