The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Provide an opportunity for learners to develop skills to do independent research in selected areas in Library and Information Studies. This will assist the South African nation with highly qualified people who are competent to do research.

Access may be gained to the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Entry Requirements:
Master of Library Science, Level 9 or equivalent.

1. Develop and present a research proposal independently.
2. Read and examine professional and academic texts with insight.
3. Understand and apply the methodological frameworks that are most appropriate to doing Library and Information Studies (LIS).

5. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of selected modules as well as the ability to do research on a topic within that subject.

    This programme will be assessed in the form of a Doctoral dissertation only.
