The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this programme is to enable candidates to acquire adequate research skills in Anthropology within the Faculty of Arts. This requires attention to the following three important aspects:
  • A broadening and deepening of a student's knowledge in the Anthropology disciplines as specified. This is achieved through course work leading to detailed literature surveys.
  • The development of basic research skills.
  • The writing of a mini-thesis on the basis of an accepted research proposal.

    Prior learning may be recognised for access.

    Entry Requirements:
    Learners with a relevant Honours Degree, Level 8 or equivalent (Level 8) may be admitted.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcomes:
  • An in-depth knowledge of Anthropology is demonstrated in projects and papers produced.
  • Research is completed and evidence is produced on a limited Anthropology topic of study.
  • Knowledge and generic research skills are expressed in Anthropology in an integrated, logical and coherent manner through written work.
  • Abstract thoughts are structured and expressed in a logical and coherent way.
  • Delimitation, literature searches, logical analysis, balanced interpretation are conducted whilst demonstrating consistent use of a system of references.

    Integrated Assessment:
    The following forms of assessment are used:
  • Research papers.
  • Examinations.
  • A research proposal.
  • A mini-thesis. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Horizontal Articulation:
    Master of Arts in Sociology, Level 9.

    Vertical Articulation:
    The Master's Degree leads to Doctoral research in a related discipline.
