The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • To promote in learners, mastery of theoretical subject matter and comprehensive knowledge of the field of community work.
  • To develop their ability to independently analyse new and abstract data and situations using a wide range of techniques appropriate to the field.
  • To enhance their ability to identify and define needs and problems of individuals, groups, organisations and communities and to apply relevant knowledge, skills, values and ethics to their solution.
  • To promote advanced understanding and skills in research methods. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • The Honours Degree in social work.
  • The four year Bachelor Degree in social work with exceptional competence in both theory and practical work.
  • Any other suitable qualification and or experience to be approved by the Head of the Department.

    At the end of the programme the learner should be able to:
    1. Demonstrate the ability to develop programmes for the empowerment of communities.
    2. Demonstrate supervisory, administrative and management knowledge and skills.
    3. Establish and maintain relationships with strategic partners in government, civil society and bilateral agencies.
    4. Participate in policy formulation, implementation and analysis in relation to community work. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated Assessment:
  • Assignments, planning and organising events, research report, practical assessment, class presentations and final examinations. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Work opportunities in government and non-governmental organisations nationally, provincially and locally, training institutions, research bodies and industry. They can also pursue further studies at this university or elsewhere in the country or overseas. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Lecturers who provide the course act as internal examiners. External examiners are appointed from other tertiary institutions. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    A minimum of a Masters Degree and practical experience in the field.
