The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
Bachelor of Nursing Honours Degree is one of the Postgraduate programmes offered by the Department of Advanced Nursing Science at the University of Venda. This Degree can be taken on a full-time basis. It is seen to be at the same level as the fourth year of the Professional Degree. It is a mandatory for candidates who have a three-year Degree if they want to continue with a research Masters' Degree, to give candidates the research background they need. It is an important degree that also caters for all candidates who have a basic Degree which did not include the career option they want to pursue, such as Nursing Education.

Rationale:
Nursing Education is a specialist field that focuses on Nursing Education. The programme plays a key role in the production, advancement and dissemination of knowledge and the development of students. Nursing Education impact on trends, contemporary legal and ethical issues in Nursing Education, create culture sensitive work environments for nursing Education students. The qualification provides the qualifying Nurse Educator with the further development of her/his intellectual, practical and reflective competencies/abilities (knowledge, skills, attitudes and values) as a Nursing Service Manager to promote the health of the individual, family, group and community as an active member of the intersectoral, multi-professional and multi-disciplinary health teams.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The university's Policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is applied. The RPL policy takes into account the relevant knowledge and skills gained in practice that meets the minimum requirements of the programme.

Entry Requirements:
Bachelor of Nursing Honours Degree is open to students who have attained a sufficiently high standard in the final undergraduate course in Nursing, average of 60%. Candidates should be in possession of three-year professional Degree in Nursing and additional qualification in Advanced Diploma Nursing field. Candidates shall have passed with 65% overall in Advanced Diploma in Nursing field. The programme shall extend over at least two semesters.

    Associated Assessment Criteria for Exit Level Outcome 4:
  • Write a research proposal for implementation.
  • Describe the different research approach and designs as they apply to nursing practice.
  • Review appropriate literature on nursing related topics.

    Integrated Assessment:
  • For each module, students will be expected to submit one written assignment (20%), write one test (30%), give oral presentation (10%), and write one 3 hours examination (40%) at the end of semester. For each formative task given, student will receive written and oral individual and group feedback.
  • Student must obtain minimum of 40% in formative assessment to be admitted in final examination (summative assessment).
  • Final pass mark will be 50%.
  • Research project examined by 1 internal examiner and 1 external examiner. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    The qualification is comparable with the Honours Programme in Health Studies in the following universities:
  • Makerere University of Technology, Tanzania.
  • Virginia University, United States of America.
