The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:

Rationale:
The qualification in Animal Science has been designed to ensure that learners acquire analytical, reasoning, communication and computer literacy skills at an advanced level. Real-life problems encountered in commercial, small-scale emerging livestock farming and public sector are used to develop research skills. On qualifying, learners will be enhanced with the level of social awareness and responsibility and understanding of their role in society as agricultural scientists. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

    This qualification comprises of a compulsory thesis at NQF Level 10 totalling 360 Credits.

    1. Appreciate the role of Agriculture in human affairs.
    2. Demonstrate a level of professionalism in research and teaching.
    3. Apply basic economic principles in Animal production.
    4. Plan, execute, analyse and report laboratory and field experiments in solving problems of livestock producers.
    5. Understand the multi-faceted roles of agriculture in society in its various linkages with other spheres of human affairs in order to properly situate the learner's role in the light of other qualifications.
    6. Participate meaningfully using skills, mainly scientific acquired in discussions and decision-making in respect of agricultural and related problems.
    7. Function independently with minimal supervision and to adequately supervise subordinates, particularly in agricultural matters.
    8. Participate and initiate policy about the area of specialisation. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated Assessment:
    A variety of continuous and cumulative assessment methods which include field and laboratory practical's, take-home assignments, projects, group and individual work, written and oral examinations which will be utilised to evaluate whether learning outcomes have been attained. The learners will have to display problem-solving skills and prove their grasp and understanding of principles and applications of the discipline. At the end of the qualification, a thesis will be evaluated by internal and external examiners. This includes portfolios, simulations, workplace assessments and oral examinations.

    This qualification compares with the following international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered.
